A large fire is raging in southern France, with more than 5,000 hectares of land and vegetation destroyed by the flames, the local prefecture said late on Tuesday. Colonel Alexandre Jouassard from the civil defence authority told broadcaster BFMTV that the flames in Ribaute, near Carcassonne, spread with unusual speed, and it was unlikely the fire would be extinguished by the evening.
