                                Fourth of July                                     July 14^th, 2016

 

Good morning, everyone!

This month there was an important American holiday. It was on July 4^th. It is called Independence Day but we usually just say, “the Fourth of July.” A long time ago, the U.S. was part of Britain. Originally, this holiday was meant to celebrate the United States’independence from Britain which happened on July 4^th, 1776. At that time, we separated from Britain.

Nowadays, Fourth of July is kind of a “United States Day” for us. Some people are very patriotic on this day. Being patriotic means showing strong support or love for one’s country. So some people on this day wear clothes that are red, white, and blue. Red, White and Blue are the United States’ flag’s colors. Also, some past and present military members might wear their uniforms on this day. Additionally, many places in the U.S.will have the American flag displayed – even more than usual.

There are many public events on the Fourth.Some cities have parades which might have various community groups, kids, or marching bands walking or performing in them. There are also big concerts on this holiday. The most popular event for Fourth of July are firework shows,though. Most cities will put on a firework show for the public to watch. The Fourth of July is our main day for fireworks.

Some people may also use their own fireworks at home, but this is not legal everywhere. For example, in my city,we cannot use fireworks at home. It is too dry where I live – using fireworks could cause a fire.

The last big part of Fourth of July are BBQs. Most people have a BBQ at their home with their friends and family. We grill burgers, hot dogs, steaks, etc on the BBQ. Potato salad and baked beans are popular BBQ side dishes, as well as watermelon. This year my Dad made ribs,hot dogs, corn on the cob, grilled veggies, salad, and bread.

Overall, the Fourth of July is a fun day for people to get together with their friends and family and have a good time. If you ever have any questions about American culture or other holidays, please ask me.

今月アメリカにとって重要な祝日がありました。７月４日です。独立記念日といいますが、単に”the Fourth of July（７月４日記念日）”と言うこともあります。昔はアメリカはイギリスの一部でした。本来、この祝日は1776年７月４日にアメリカがイギリスから独立したことを祝うことを意味するものでした。

 

今日では、独立記念日は「アメリカ合衆国の日」です。特にこの日に、愛国心の強い人がいます。愛国心が強いということは、国のための強い支持や愛を意味します。だから、この日に赤、白、青の服を着る人もいます。赤、白、青はアメリカの旗の色です。また、新旧の軍関係者の中には、この日に軍服を着る人もいます。さらに、アメリカの多くの場所では、いつもよりたくさんアメリカ国旗が揚げられます。

 

（７月）４日（独立記念日）にはイベントがたくさん行われます。様々な団体、子供たち、マーチングバンドが歩いたり、演奏したりしながらパレードをしている都市があります。この祝日には大きなコンサートも開かれます。７月４日の最も人気のあるイベントは花火です。たいていの都市では一般市民のために花火を見せるところがあります。７月４日のメインは花火です。

 

家で花火をする人もいるかもしれませんが、これはどこであっても違法です。例えば、私の町では、家で花火は出来ません。

住んでいるところが乾燥していて、花火をすると火事が起こる可能性があるからです。

 

　７月４日の最大のイベントはバーベキューです。たいていの人たちは家で友達や家族と一緒にバーベキューをします。ハンバーガーやホットドック、ステーキなどを焼きます。ポテトサラダやベークドビーンズはスイカと同様にバーベキューでは人気のある

サイドディッシュ（副菜）です。今年私の父はリブ、ホットドッグ、トウモロコシ、野菜、サラダ、パンを作りました。

 

　”the Fourth of July”は人々が友達や家族と一緒に楽しいひと時を過ごします。もしアメリカ文化や他の休日について何か質問があれば、私に聞いてください。

 My Favorite Series                June 22^nd, 2016

 

              Like many people, I love goodstories. I like them in many forms: comics, TV shows, music, and books. Thereis one series that is my favorite. I grew up with the characters. It is one that most people know: Harry Potter!

Ihave read all the books many times and seen all the movies. I got a wand for Christmas. I went to bookstores at midnight to get the books then stayed up allnight reading. I went to the midnight showing of many of the movies too anddressed up as a Hogwarts student (Gryffindor). This series has given me many greatmemories and it is one that will always be special to me and many other people.

              Now we are getting some new material from JK Rowling. Did you know there is a movie and a play coming out soon? The movie is Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, set in New York. It will be interesting to see the world of Harry Potter in the United States. In England normal people (non-wizards/witches) are called, “muggles.” Now, JKRowling has said that in the U.S., they are called “no-maj” as in “no magic.” I don’t like this name. It is not as cool as “muggle.” It’s too simple orobvious. I wish the US had gotten a better name. Actually, we have also learnedthat the magic school in Japan is called, “Mahou Tokoro.” Do you like this name? Please tell me.

　多くの人と同じように、私はシリーズ物が大好きです。　マンガ・テレビ番組・音楽・本にはたくさんのシリ－ズ物があります。　その中で私のお気に入りがあります。　私はそのキャラクター(登場人物)達と一緒に成長してきました。　そのシリーズはほとんどの人がよく知っています。　何だと思う？　ハリー・ポッター！　私は全巻何回も読んで、映画も全部見ました。　クリスマスの時には「魔法の杖」を手に入れました。　新刊を買うために真夜中に本屋に行って、それから夢中になって夜通し読みふけりました。　映画を見るときはたいていミッドナイト・ショーでホグワーツのグリフィンドール生徒のコスプレをして行きました。　ハリー・ポッター・シリーズは私に本当に多くの思い出を作ってくれました。そしてハリー・ポッターは私にとっても、多くの他の人にとっても常に特別な存在です。

　今、ＪＫローリングからの新情報が届いています。　新作映画が間もなく公開されるのを知っていますか？　　その映画は「Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find(邦題：ファンタスティック・ビーストと魔法使いの旅)」で、舞台はニューヨークです。　ニューヨークでのハリーポッター・ワールドを見るのはわくわくします。　イギリスでは魔法を持たない普通の人は「マグル」と呼ばれます。　今のところ、ＪＫローリングはアメリカでは「no magic(意味：魔法を持たない)」ということで、魔法を持たない普通の人を「ノーマジ」と呼ぶとしています。　私はこの名前が気に入りません。　「マグル」ほどかっこ良くないし、あまりにも単純すぎない？　「マグル」よりもっとクールな名前なら良かったのに。　日本での魔法学校は「Mahou Tokoro(マホウトコロ)」と呼ばれています。　この名前皆さんはお気に入りですか？　私に教えてくださいね！

　2016年11月23日に映画公開「Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find

(邦題：ファンタスティック・ビーストと魔法使いの旅)」描かれている舞台は、1997年公開された「ハリー・ポッターと賢者の石」から約70年前のアメリカです。主役は、ハリー・ポッターたちがホグワーツ魔法学校の授業で使っていた教科書【Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find】を編纂した魔法使いです。

 

今年度も朝のＳＨＲ（ショートホームルーム）の時間を使って、モーニングスピーチが行われます。ＡＬＴの先生が校内放送を使って生で全校生徒にスピーチをするものです。４月と５月に行われたスピーチの原稿を掲載します。

Good morning, Seiryo!

 

First of all, I want to say, “Welcome!!”to all the new students and teachers and “Welcome back!!” to the new second/thirdgraders and returning teachers. I hope you all are enjoying the first few weeksof the school year. Work hard this year but make sure you have some fun, too!

Now is a great time especially tohave fun because it is spring! It is finally warming up. A few weeks ago, forthe first time since winter, I didn’t have to wear a coat, hat, scarf, andgloves while riding my bike to school. I was so happy! Also, this year was thefirst time I saw cherry blossoms and could experience hanami. The trees were sobeautiful. My friends and I went to Ohira park to have our picnic. It was agreat day and I’m already looking forward to experiencing hanami again nextyear!

But even though I am happy right now,sometimes I also feel stressed or sad. So, to finish this speech, here is afamous springtime saying:

                 “April showers bring May flowers.”

Here, “showers” means rain showers. The quote means that badthings (April’s rain) will always be followed by something good later (May’sflowers). So, wherever you are in life now, please keep this in mind for whenyou are stressed or unhappy. There are good times and bad times in life but thebad times won’t last forever! Good luck everyone!!

    My Golden Week                                         5/26/2016

 

Goodmorning, Seiryo!

Ihave lived in Japan since July 26th, 2015. These past ten months have beenamazing! Sometimes I do miss home, though. So for this Golden Week, I decidedto go back to California.

Istayed there for only about ten days but it was a great trip. I only told a fewpeople that I was coming home. My mom and dad were extremely surprised andhappy to see me and I was happy to see them too after ten months. The timedifference between California and Japan is currently 16 hours so it isdifficult to find time to talk to those I know back home. When they’re free, I’mat work. When I go to sleep, they wake up. So I was really happy to seeeveryone during my trip.

Idid many things while I was in California. I went to the beach, hiked a fewtimes, had a picnic at the park, and saw a musical. It was a lot of fun.Something else I really enjoyed was eating all of the foods I’ve missed sincecoming to Japan. Especially Mexican food. I ate several burritos throughout myvacation.

Livingin Japan for awhile has made me appreciate California much more. When I firstcame to Japan I was in awe because it is incredibly green here. It is very beautifulto me. It doesn’t rain as much in California so it is much less green. We havebrown hills which I never found very special because I was so used to them. Butwhen I returned, I could feel their beauty much more. There is a famous Englishsaying: “Absence makes the heart growfonder.” It means that being farfrom something makes you love it even more.

SoI really recommend living abroad if you can. You will learn about a new countryand its people but I believe you will also come to love and appreciate your ownculture even more, too.

私は２０１５年の７月２６日に日本にやってきました。その後の１０ヶ月間の日本での生活はとてもすばらしいものですが、それでも時々カリフォルニアの実家が恋しくなります。そのため、ゴールデンウィークの間に、カリフォルニアにいったん帰ることにしました。

カリフォルニアにはおよそ１０日間の滞在でしたが、すばらしい旅となりました。家に帰ることはほとんど話していなかったため、両親は私を見てとても驚き喜んでくださいました。私も１０ヶ月ぶりに会えてうれしかったです。カリフォルニアと日本の時差は１６時間ありますので、カリフォルニアにいる家族や友人たちと話しをするのは難しいです。カリフォルニアの人たちが仕事をしていないときは、私が仕事をしており、私が寝る頃には、あちらでは寝ている時間です。そのため旅行期間中にみんなに会えて本当にうれしかったです。

カリフォルニア滞在期間中にたくさんのことをして楽しみました。ビーチに行ったり、ハイキングに行ったり、公園でピクニックをしたり、ミュージカルを見たりしました。また、日本に来てから食べられていなかった料理も楽しみました。特にメキシコ料理がそうで、ブリトー^＊１はいくつも食べました。

私は日本に住んでカリフォルニアの良さにより気付くようになりました。日本に始めてきた頃、私はその緑の多さから日本に畏敬の念を感じていました。カリフォルニアでは日本ほど雨が降らないため、緑も日本と比べて少ないのです。日本に来る前はカリフォルニアに多くある茶色の丘などの風景には特に気にかけていませんでしたが、日本滞在を経て見てみると、そうしたカリフォルニアの風景に美しさを感じるようになりました。英語のことわざに「逢わねばいや増す恋心」という有名なものがあります。これは離れてみるとより大切に思えるようになるということを意味します。

私は、もしできるならことなら外国に住んでみることをおすすめします。そうすることによって、その国やその国の人たちについて学ぶことができますし、また自分の国をより好きになりより知ることができると思います。

     My Short Trip to Taiwan                                      3/22/2016

 

Goodmorning, everyone!

 

Last month I went on a small vacation to Taiwan. Taiwan is only afew hours away from Japan by plane. The country used to be called, “Formosa”which means beautiful island. And avery beautiful island, it is!

One great thing was the weather. It was warm in Taiwan. We couldwear short-sleeve shirts and shorts. It was a great change from the chillyweather in Japan. I really enjoyed it. My friends and I were able to experiencemany fun things in Taiwan. First, we went to the zoo in Taipei. It was very,very cheap – around 200 yen. We were able to see many different animals,including many native to Taiwan.

Near the zoo are some gondolas you can take to Maokong. These gondolascross over some beautiful green hills. You can see both gorgeous nature and thecity of Taipei from these gondolas. It was a wonderful view. Once we reachedMaokong in the hills, we had some tea and made music with some of the othercustomers. Some of us sang, while others played guitar, drums, or maracas. Itwas fun spending time with locals.

The next day, we went to a port city called Keelung by train. Mygroup of friends was separated from each other and we were lost for at least anhour. But by being lost, we were able to discover many interesting things thatwe wouldn’t have otherwise. After we found the rest of our friends again, wewent to the night market in Keelung. I went to a few night markets in Taipeibut this one in Keelung was the best. There is a street lined with lanterns,food stalls, and crowds of people. It was very lively. I recommend it if youvisit Taiwan.

The last thing we did in Taiwan was visit the tallest building –Taipei 101. Taipei 101 has the world’s fastest elevator. You can’t really feelhow fast it is except that your ears pop and there is a screen that shows howfast you are going to the top floor. It was crazy how fast it went. On a clearday, you can get a great view of the city from the top floor. Overall, I reallyenjoyed my visit to Taiwan and hope to go back someday soon.

T: Good morning,Seiryo! Today we have a special guest. His name is Izumi-sensei. He is anEnglish teacher here at Seiryo. So, Izumi-sensei, you said that you werereading a good book. What is it?

 

I: It is “TheUpside of Stress” by Kelly McGonigal of Stanford University.

 

T: Oh, wow. Thatsounds very interesting. What is it about?

 

I: She says that noone wants to be stressed. But the correct way to deal with stress is toconfront it directly and to view stress as a good thing, not a bad thing. Bydoing so, we can strengthen our resilience to stress. By telling other peopleabout our stress, we can reduce it. Doing things with other people is veryimportant. By facing the stress itself, we can be more confident. Stress ismeaningful; we should accept it to ultimately reduce it. Don’t try to escape it.

 

T: Do you eversuffer from stress, Izumi-sensei?

 

I: Yes, yes I do. Somany times. In my past, I thought stress was very bad. I think this was thecause of my past cancer. We can feel stress anywhere, even when we’re withother people. Even completely alone in a hospital room, I felt stress. So, Iwas looking for a book on how to deal with stress. And then I saw this book atthe bookstore.

 

T: Do you have anyother ways to cope with stress?

 

I: Doing somethingfor other people can reduce stress.  After we cope with stress, we will become strongermentally and physically. This is another good point of stress Positive thinkingis a good thing.

 

T: Wow, very wisewords, Izumi-sensei. I think everyone can benefit from thinking positivelytowards stress. Thank you very much for sharing with us today.

Good morning,everyone!

How was your winter vacation? This winter vacation I was lucky to be able to do many things.I took the train to Tokyo on Christmas Eve to pick up my boyfriend and spent a few days there, including Christmas. It was my first Christmas away from home.It was very different than being in the U.S. on Christmas. We went out and sawsome sights in Tokyo such as the park in Shinjuku. Later that night, we were able to see an illumination in Tokyo Midtown. There were so many people there but it was the last day so we got in line. The line took us down into a shopping mall, through a few big conference rooms, back up onto the street, then finally we reached the illumination. The line was a little crazy but it was very beautiful to watch.

After we left Tokyo, we took the train to Shizuoka. On the way, we could see Mt. Fuji throughthe window. It was a beautiful sight! We went to Shizuoka to spend time with my younger sister. We went to Izu Shaboten Park, which had many animals and cacti. It was an early, long trip to the park from Shizuoka City and I almost didn’t go because I was so tired. But I’m glad I went. It was a very interesting place! The best part was seeing the capybara taking a yuzu bath. It was so cute. Now, capybaras are one of my favorite animals. I love their facial expression. This was one of my favorite moments of winter vacation.

On our last day in Shizuoka, on the way back to Utsunomiya, we stopped in Atami, a famous onsen town. Here, I was able to try onsen for the first time. The bath was so, so hot. It was crazy. After I got used to the heat, it was relaxing.

Finally, towards the end of winter vacation, we went to Disney Sea. I grew up going toDisneyland every year, so Disney parks are a very special place for me. As soonas I walked into Disney Sea, I was so happy! It is a beautiful park. My favorite ride was Tower of Terror. We have it in California but the story and design of the building are different. That evening, my boyfriend proposed. I was so surprised. So, now I am engaged!

This winter vacation was a very exciting and fun one for me. I was also able to relax a lot. I hope you all had a fun and relaxing winter vacation, too and thank you for listening to this morning speech.

Merry Christmas!!!                     12/10/2015

 

Good morning, everyone! Today I am going to talk about my favorite holiday: Christmas! Christmas is the biggest holiday in the United States. This will be my first Christmas away from home and I am excited to see Christmas in Japan. So far I have been happy to see and hear some familiar things such as Christmas lights on people’s houses and Christmas music in stores. It really reminded me of home and I felt warm inside and smiled.

              I have heard that in Japan Christmas is spent with friends and New Years with family. In the U.S., we spend Christmas with our family and New Years with our friends. People do Christmas activities throughout December. Many people buy presents and Christmas cards for their friends and family. We decorate our homes and buy Christmas trees. We drive around looking at the Christmas lights on people’s houses. We listen to and sing Christmas songs. Sometimes people make gingerbread houses or cookies. Children visit Santa Claus at the mall. They sit on his lap and tell him what they want for Christmas, then a photo is taken. We do these things to get into the “Christmas spirit.” The Christmas spirit is a warm feeling of happiness and excitement for Christmas.

              On Christmas Eve, children put out milk and cookies for Santa. On Christmas, we open all the presents. Most restaurants and stores are closed so we have a big Christmas dinner at home,similar to what we have on Thanksgiving, but with ham and eggnog, a thick,sweet drink made of eggs, milk, cream, and sugar. My mom is part Mexican so sometimes I eat tamales which are made of corn dough, filled with meat or vegetables, and cooked in a corn husk. Overall, it is usually a wonderful,relaxing, fun day!

皆さん、おはようございます。今日は私の大好きな休暇についてお話します。クリスマスです。クリスマスはアメリカでは最大の休暇です。

　

今年のクリスマス休暇は家を離れて初めてのクリスマスで、日本で経験するクリスマスにわくわくしています。これまでのところ家々のクリスマスの照明やお店から聞こえてくるクリスマスの音楽などを見たり聞いたりして楽しんでいます。そしてアメリカの家を思い出して温かい気持ちになってニコニコしています。

　

日本ではクリスマスは友だちと過ごし、新年は家族と過ごすと聞いたことがあります。アメリカではクリスマスは家族と過ごし、新年は友だちと過ごします。クリスマスの活動は１２月一杯続きます。多くの人が友達や家族にプレゼントやクリストスカード買います。家を飾り付け、クリスマスツリーを買います。家々の照明を見ながらドライブもします。クリスマスソングを聞いたり歌ったりします。ジンジャーブレッドやクッキーを作ることもあります。子供たちはショッピングモールにサンタクロースを訪問します。子供たちはサンタクロースの膝の上に座り、クリスマスに何が欲しいのかを伝え、その時写真を撮ってもらいます。私たちはこのようなことをして「クリスマス気分」を味わいます。クリスマスの気分はクリスマスの嬉しさと興奮が混じった温かい感情です。

　

クリスマスイブに子供たちはサンタのためにミルクとクッキーを用意します。クリスマスの日にはプレゼントを全部開けます。大部分のレストランやお店が閉まっているので、私たちは家庭で豪華なクリスマスディナーを食べます。そのディナーで食べるものは感謝祭の日と似ていますが、ハムエッグノッグや卵、ミルク、クリームそして砂糖で作られた濃くて甘い飲み物が付きます。私の母はメキシコ系なので時々肉や野菜が詰まったトウモロコシの生地で作られ、トウモロコシの皮で巻いて料理したタマーリを食べることもあります。全体として、その日は素晴らしい、リラックスした、楽しい日です。

　

モーニングスピーチを聞いてくれてありがとうございます。今年は日本で初めてのクリスマスになるのでわくわくしています。

Thanksgiving                 11/19/2015

Good morning,everyone!

Today I want to talk about the next holiday in the United States –Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is always on the fourth Thursday of November. This year it is on November 26^th which is next week!

On Thanksgiving, we celebrate everything we are thankful for: our family, friends, pets, homes, food, and more. How do we celebrate? We eat! We have a big dinner with our family and friends. The most important food of Thanksgiving dinner is the turkey. A turkey is a big bird. It is bigger than a chicken. People wake up early and start cooking the turkey and other foods. Popular Thanksgiving foods are: turkey, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes,and stuffing. Stuffing is chopped bread and seasonings that we put inside the turkey. It is very soft and delicious. After we eat, we break the “wishbone.”The wishbone is a bone that looks like a Y in some birds. Two people hold the turkey’s wishbone and break it. The person with the bigger piece can make a wish.

In the morning, many people watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV. Many people walk down the streets of New York. They are dancing,singing, and playing instruments. Also, there are very big balloons that look like characters. For example: Spongebob, Snoopy, Pikachu, or Thomas the Tank Engine. It is a very famous and fun parade.

The day after Thanksgiving is called “Black Friday.” On Black Friday, stores have very big discounts. It is a very popular and crazy day to go shopping. Many, many people go to stores. It is very crowded. Every year,stores open earlier. Now, some stores open on Thursday evening, not Friday. Some people want to be the first customers so they sleep outside the stores intents. It is really crazy. The next Monday is called Cyber Monday. On this day,the internet shops give big discounts. I prefer Cyber Monday because I can shop at home in my pajamas with a cup of tea, relaxing.

　Today I want to talk about the next holiday in the United States - Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving（感謝祭）はだいたい11月の第4木曜日です。今年は11月26日，next weekです！

　感謝祭では，感謝しているものすべてに対して祝福します。例えば，our family，friends，pets，homes，foodなど，もっとありますがそういうものにです。どういうふうにして祝福するのかわかりますか？We eat! すごいご馳走を食べるのですwith our family and friends. 感謝祭のディナーで一番重要なのはturkey（七面鳥）です。Turkey is a big bird. 鶏より大きい鳥です。みんな早起きしてturkeyやいろいろな食べ物を料理し始めます。人気のある感謝祭の食べ物は，turkeyとカボチャpie，クランベリーソース，マッシュポテト，詰め物料理です。Stuffing はturkeyの中に小さく切ったパンと調味料を入れたものです。とても柔らかくおいしいです。それを食べた後に，wishboneをおっかきます。ウィッシュボーンは鳥の体の中にあるYの形に見える骨です。二人で引っ張り合って，おっかけたあとで大きな方を持っていた方の人の願い事が叶うというのです。

　Thanksgivingの午前中は，テレビでthe Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade（番組名）を見ます。New Yorkの大通りに繰り出す人もいます。そして，dancingしたり，singingしたり，楽器を演奏したりします。それから，キャラクターの形をした巨大バルーンも姿を現します。Spongebob（スポンジバブ）やSnoopy，Thomas the Tank Engine（機関車トーマス）などです。とても有名で楽しいparadeです。

　Thanksgiving の次の日はBlack Fridayと呼ばれています。On Black Friday，お店は安売りの大売り出しをします。みんがそこでの買い物に夢中になってしまうような日です。ほんとうに大勢の人がお店に行くのです。とても混雑します。年々，開店時間が早くなっています。木曜日の夕方から始めるお店も出ています。金曜日になっていないのにね。一番目の来店客になりたくてお店の外でテントを張って寝て待つ人もいます。本当にcrazyです。Next MondayはCyber Monday と呼ばれています。この日には，Internet shops が大売り出しをします。私はCyber Mondayの方が好きです。なぜなら，家でパジャマ姿でリラックスしながらteaを片手に買い物ができるからです。

Another Small Introduction                    10/28/15

Good morning, everyone!

I am the new ALT at Seiryo. I introduced myself at the opening ceremony in August, but that was a long time ago. So, I will tell you about myself a little.

              My name is Taylor Russell. Taylor is my first name and Russell is my family name. I am 24 years old. When I was in high school, I really liked anime and manga. Some of my favorites were 20^th Century Boys, One Piece, and Fullmetal Alchemist. Because of anime, I became interested in Japan.

              After high school, I got very lucky and I was able to visit Japan. I stayed in Japan with 4 host families for 6 weeks during the hot summer of 2009. It was an amazing trip!! I stayed in Mie and Gifu and visited many places. One of my favorite places was Shirakawa-go in Gifu. It was so beautiful! I want to go there again when there is snow. Before I came here, I was interested in Japan because of anime. After I came here, I was interested in Japan because of the people living here. Every Japanese person I met was very, very kind to me. After this trip, I wanted to come back and teach English in Japan.

              In 2013, my last year of university, I tried to become an ALT in Japan. But I was too nervous in my interview and I did not get the job. I was very, very sad but my teacher told me to try again. I didn’t want to because it was so difficult but I listened to her. I did more volunteer work and became more confident. Then, I did the interview again and I passed! It took a long time and I was very sad sometimes but now I am here in Japan. And I am so happy! So, please, never give up!! If you fail once, please try again! It may be difficult but you can do it! It is worth it.

              Thank you for listening to my first morning speech. If you see me, in Seiryo or somewhere in Utsunomiya, please talk to me! I eat lunch in the teacher’s room, so please come there if you want to talk during lunch.

自己紹介をもう一度

皆さん、おはようございます！

　　　　

私は清陵高校の新しいALTです。８月の始業式の時に自己紹介をさせて頂きましたが、もうだいぶ前のことですので、もう一度少しだけ自分のことについて、話したいと思います。

私の名前はラッセル，テイラーです。ラッセルは名字で、テイラーは名前です。２４歳です。高校生のとき、アニメと漫画が本当に好きで、「２０世紀少年」や「ワンピース」、「鋼の錬金術師」が大好きでした。私は、これらのアニメのおかげで、日本に興味を持つようになりました。

　高校を終えてから、幸運にも日本を訪問することができました。２００９年の蒸し暑い夏の６週間、日本で４つのホストファミリー宅に滞在しました。素晴らしい旅になりました。三重県や岐阜県に滞在し、多くの場所を訪れました。一番良かったところは、岐阜県の白川郷、とても美しかったです。雪のあるときにもう一度訪れたいと思っています。日本に来る前は、日本のアニメに興味を持ち、日本に来た後は、日本に住んでいる人に魅かれて、日本に興味を持つようになりました。私が出会った日本人は皆、私にとても親切でした。その旅が終わってからは、日本に戻って英語を教えたいと思うようになりました。

　２０１３年、大学生活最後の年、日本でALTになろうと努力しましたが、面接の試験では緊張しすぎてしまってALTの仕事を手に入れることはできませんでした。私は、とても悲しかったのですが、私の先生がもう一度挑戦するように言ってくれました。それからは、これまで以上にボランティア活動に励み、自信をつけることができました。そして、もう一度面接を受け、合格しました。それまで長い時間がかかり、辛かったこともありましたが、私は、今ここ、日本にいます。とても幸せです。だから、絶対に諦めないでください。一度失敗しても、もう一度頑張ってください。難しいかもしれませんが、あなたならできる。やってみる価値があります。

私の初めてのモーニング・スピーチを聞いて頂きありがとうございました。清陵高校や宇都宮のどこかで私にあったら、どうぞ話しかけてください。

昼休みは、職員室にいて昼食をとっていますので、私と話をしたいと思ったら気軽に声をかけてください。

　清陵のみなさん、おはようございます。

　調子はどうですか？いい感じだといいですね。

  今日は、まず新入生に「ようこそ」と言いたいと思います。皆さんは、
清陵での最初の数週間を楽しんでいることでしょう。疲れている人も
いるかもしれませんね。新しい友達を作ったり、部活動に入ったり、
宿題を終わらせたり･･･。声を大にして言いたいことは、

自分の時間を楽しんでください、ということです。

　「楽しむ」と言えば、ゆったり座ってリラックスし、花見をする。１年で
今頃が１番いい時期ですね。世界中を見ても、日本が桜を見るには
１番有名な国です。世界中の旅行者が美しい白い花を楽しむために
来日します。アイルランドにはほんの少ししか桜の木がないので、
１年のこの時期はまさに ”magical ”です。

　花見は素晴らしいですが、残念ながら今年は天気が良くなかった
ですね。ずっと雨が降り、終いには雪まで降りました。４月に雪なんて、
間違いなくおかしいですね。温暖化により、世界の気候はおかしく
なっています。　では、将来、異常気象にさせないようにできる、
いくつかの策をお知らせします。

　　１　部屋を出るときは、必ず（いつも）電気を消す。

　　２  使っていないときは、蛇口を閉める。（水を流しっぱなしにしない。）

　　３　３つのR  （Reduce, Reuse, recycle）

　もし、各自がこの３つのことをすれば、大きな変化が生じ、将来花見を
するのに素晴らしい天候になるでしょう。

#1 Morning Speech      Welcome Spring               22/04/2015

 

Good morning Seiryo,

 

How are you all? I hope you are all great!!

 

First today, I would like to say WELCOME to all our new students. I hope you are all enjoying your first few weeks here. I know it can be tiring, making new friends, joining new clubs and trying to get all your homework done but please make sure to enjoy your time too!!

Speaking of enjoying oneself, this is the best time of year to sit back, relax and have a Hanami party : ) Around the world, Japan is the most famous country for its beautiful Cherry Blossom Tress (Sakura). Tourists come from all over the world to watch the beautiful pink flowers bloom across the country. We only have a few Sakura Trees in Ireland so I really think this time of year is magical!!

Hanami is wonderful but unfortunately this year the weather was not good. It rained most days and actually snowed. Snow in April, sure that’s crazy!! It is crazy, but because of Climate Change and Global warming, the climate and weather around the world is just going to get crazier.

Today, I want to tell you a few things that you can do to make sure the weather doesn’t get too crazy in the future;

1.    Always turn the light off when you leave a room.

2.    Turn the water tap off when you are not using it.

3.    Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!!

If everyone did these 3 things, we would be able to make a big change and make sure that we will have great weather for future Hanami parties: )

#10 Morning Speech      St. Patrick’s Day                    19/03/2015

Good morning Seriyo,

 

I hope you are all enjoying the warmer weather. I can’t believe this is the last morning speech of the school year. It only feels like yesterday that I was welcoming the first grade students to the school. How time flies when you’re having fun : ) Before we begin today’s topic, I would like to wish you all a safe and fun Spring vacation. I hope you all come back rested and ready for the next school year!!

              So, today I am going to tell you about Ireland’s national holiday, St. Patrick’s Day. This day was originally celebrated because a man named Patrick introduced Christianity to Ireland. Today however, it is a day to celebrate the beautiful island of Ireland and for simply being Irish.

              The population of Ireland is around 5 million people but there are more than 70 million people that have Irish heritage living around the world. Irish people are famous for travelling and we live all around the world. Even my family is a great example of this. I have a sister living in New York, another in New Zealand and I myself live in Japan. Also, I have over 30 family members who live in America. This is one of the main reasons why St. Patrick’s Day is such a huge celebration around the world.

              Well, what do we do to celebrate? Traditionally, people celebrate by going to a parade in their home town. Many people listen to Irish music, go dancing and sing Irish songs; this is known as Ceol agus Craic (music & fun) in my native language Irish. This year there was an Irish festival and parade in Tokyo. I was lucky enough to go to it and enjoy all the treats from home.            

It is a great day to celebrate and I am always glad to celebrate being Irish no matter where I am in the world!!: ) That’s all for today, see you all in April.

清陵高校のみなさん，おはようございます。

だんだんと暖かくなり，皆さんの気分も変化してきている頃でしょう。今回で10回目のモーニングスピーチとなりますが，今回が最後となるなんて信じられないくらい，今年度があっという間に過ぎ去りました。私が1年生の皆さんをお迎えしたのが昨日のことのように思えます。楽しい時間はなんとあっという間に過ぎ去ることか！今回の話を始める前に，少し早いですが，皆さんが何事もなく楽しい春休みを過ごすことを願っています。十分疲れをとるとともに，新学期の準備を十分行った皆さんと，またお会いできることを楽しみにしています。

それでは，今回はアイルランドの祝日である，聖パトリックの祝日についてお話ししますね。この日は，もともとはアイルランドにキリスト教を広めた，パトリックという男の人を祝う日でした。しかしながら，今日では，アイルランドの美しい島を祝ったり，アイルランド人であることを祝ったりする日になっています。

アイルランドの人口は約500万人です。しかし，世界中には7,000万人以上のアイルランド出身者がいます。アイルランド人は旅が好きなことで有名です。だから世界中の各地にアイルランド人が住んでいるのです。私の家族もその代表的な例です。私にはニューヨークに住んでいる姉妹がいます。そして，もう一人はニュージーランドにいます。私自身も日本に住んでいることは皆さんもご存じのとおり。その上，私にはアメリカに住んでいる親類が30人以上もいます。こういうわけで，聖パトリックの祝日が世界中でこんなに大々的なお祝いの日となっているのです。

では，私たちはこの日を祝うためにどんなことをするでしょう？伝統的に，人々は故郷のパレードに参加することによって祝います。多くの人がアイルランドの音楽を聴きます。踊りに行ったりアイルランドソングを歌います。これは私の母国語であるアイルランド語で，Ceolagus Craic（音楽と楽しみ）として知られています。今年は東京でアイルランドフェスティバルとパレードがありました。ラッキーにも私は，そこへ行き故郷のもてなしを楽しむことが出来ました。

聖パトリックの祝日はとてもすばらしい日なのです。そして私は世界中のどこにいても，いつも自分がアイルランド人であることを祝うことが出来て嬉しいのです。今日はこれで終わりです。4月にまたお会いしましょう！

#9 Morning Speech  Valentine’s Day- Traditions        12/02/2015

 

 Good Morning Seiryo,

 

Love, Love, Love!! That’s what today’s morning speech is all about. This Saturday, February 14^th is St. Valentines, whoo: ) The one special day of the year that people show they love each other.

 In the 19^th century the tradition of sending valentines cards became very popular. The cards usually have pictures of hearts and flowers and contain a poem or a message on them.Simple messages give some people the courage to show their true feelings to the person they love.

Last year, I experienced my first Valentine’s Day in Japan. Let me say that I was extremely confused! In Ireland, it is a day when boyfriends & girlfriends, husbands & wives and secret admirers give cards and exchange gifts. In Japan it is quite different. Here presents, usually chocolates are only given to boys and men on Valentine’s Day. I was so shocked at this, what about the women? Well, I was told, that’s what White Day is for. On March 14^th, exactly one month after Valentine’s Day, women get presents from their loved ones. I felt relieved hearing this: ) Japan is the only country that I know of, that has two Valentine’s Days, which is great for all the chocolate companies.

I hope you all have a wonderful Valentine’s Day this year. Whether you are a boy or girl tell everyone you love in your life how much you appreciate them.

愛・愛・愛！これが今日のモーニングスピーチのすべてよ。今週土曜の２月１４日はバレンタインデーね。フー(^^) お互いの愛を示す特別な日だわ。

１９世紀、バレンタインカードを贈るという習慣が一般的になったわ。カードにはハートやお花の絵が描かれており、詩やメッセージを書くの。シンプルなメッセージなら、好きな人に思いを伝えようという気になるわよね。

昨年、私にとっては日本で初めてのバレンタインデーだったわ。私はとっても困惑したわ！アイルランドでは、彼氏彼女、夫婦、秘密の恋人たちがカードを渡してプレゼントを交換するのよ。日本はかなり違うわね。プレゼントはチョコで、しかも男の子だけがもらえるのね。これにはビックリよ！女性にはないの？って。そしたら、それはホワイトデーだって聞いたわ。３月１４日、ちょうどバレンタインの１ヵ月後に、女性は好きな人からプレゼントをもらえるのね。これを聞いて安心したわ(^^)私が知っている中ではこんなの日本だけだわ。バレンタインデーが２回もあるなんて。（注※海外にはホワイトデーはないので、ステイシーは「バレンタインデーが２回ある」という表現をしています。）これってチョコレート会社にはとっても素晴らしいことね！

みんな、今年も素敵なバレンタインを！男の子も女の子も、大切な人に、あなたがどれだけ感謝しているかを伝えてね。

#8 Morning Speech    Happy New Year from New Zealand         28/01/2015

 

Good morning Seriyo, Happy New Year!!

I hope you all had a wonderful, relaxing winter break and have settled into the last term of school. I spent this winter vacation visiting my sister who lives in New Zealand.

Today I want to tell you about this beautiful country. In case you don’t know, New Zealand is located South-East of Australia in the Southern Hemisphere. I was very lucky to visit there in December because it is summer time there. It felt crazy coming from Japan to step off the plane in Auckland, where it was 25 degrees. It was beautiful :) What felt even more strange was seeing Christmas trees and decorations in shops beside the beach. I was very confused for the first few days.

New Zealand is famous for many things. Two reasons I knew New Zealand was famous was; first, they have the best Rugby team in the world. The All Black Rugby Team is known for being extremely tough to beat. One of the reasons for this is because of the Haka. The Haka is a traditional warrior dance, performed by the indigenous people of New Zealand, Maoris.  Before every Rugby game the New Zealand players perform this warrior’s dance. I saw the Haka in Auckland and I must say it was extremely scary.

The second reason I knew New Zealand was famous was because the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies were made there. The whole country is absolutely amazing and beautiful which is why Director Peter Jackson wanted to film all his movies there. Everywhere you look there are snow-covered mountains, lush green forests and crystal blue waters. One of my favorite memories of the trip was visiting Hobbiton. One of the sets used for the movies. It was fantastic!

  楽しい冬休みを過ごし、新学期の生活に入ったことでしょう。私はこの冬休み、ニュージーランドにいる妹のところで過ごしました。
  今回はニュージーランドについてお話します。知らない人もいるかもしれないので、位置をお知らせしますね。ニュージーランドは南半球にあり、オーストラリアの南東にあります。現地が夏である１２月に行けてラッキーでした。（でも、）オークランドの空港に降り立った時、気温が２５℃もあったので、気分が悪くなりました。まあ、景色は奇麗ででしたよ。もっと奇妙だったのは、ビーチ横の店に飾られたクリスマスツリーや飾りを見たことでした。初めの数日間は、頭が混乱してました。
  ニュージーランドは、多くの事柄で有名です。有名な理由のうち、私が知っている２つのことは、まず、世界に誇るラグビーチーム ”All Blacks”です。他国のチームが勝つのは本当に難しいと思います。試合前、彼らは”Haka”というダンスを踊ります。それは伝統的な勇者の踊りで、マオリ族の人々によるものです。私はその踊りをオークランドで見ましたが、本当に怖かったです。
　２つめは、”the Lord of the Rings”や”The Hobbit ”の映画です。これらはこの国で撮影されました。国土全体がとても美しくて、それ故に監督のPeter Jacksonが全編通して映画を撮りたいと思ったのでしょう。あちこちに雪に覆われた山々、青々とした森、透き通った青い海を見ることができます。今回の旅行のお気に入りの思い出の１つは、Hobbitonに行ったことですね。映画で使われたセットの１つで、素晴らしかったですよ。

6 Morning Speech        Mt. Fuji            19/11/2014

 

Good morning Seiryo,

 

How are you all? I hope you are all great. The weather is after getting a lot colder, so I hope you are all keeping warm.

During summer vacation my sister came to visit me from Auckland, New Zealand. We had so many amazing experiences but one of my favorites from our time together is climbing Mt. Fuji.

From the beginning we knew this was going to be a tough climb. We took our time and even had fun. The scenery of the mountain above us and the valley below us was beautiful.

We walked until there were stars in sky. Around 8pm it got very cold, windy and too dangerous for us to keep climbing. We decided to stay in a mountain hut to get warm and to sleep a little bit. There were many people staying in the hut, a great mix of Japanese people and foreigners. 

At 1am we got up and continued our journey up the mountain. At this time it was extremely cold but we kept our spirits high by talking to the many people climbing the mountain. The night sky was so beautiful that I could not stop looking up at the starry night. It looked magical!

By 4am we reached the top, just before sunrise. At the top they were selling everything, including hot drinks which were very much appreciated. The top was so crowded but we were lucky to find the perfect spot to watch the sunrise.

Slowly the sun rose and everyone looked on in awe. Watching the sunrise with my sister, from the roof of Japan, was truly amazing!! I will never ever forget that experience. If you have never climbed Mt. Fuji, please do!! You will not regret it.

　皆さんいかがお過ごしですか。お元気のことと思います。非常に寒くなってきているので暖かでいてください。

　夏休み中に姉がニュージーランドのオークランドから私の所にやってきました。私たちは非常に素晴らしい体験をしましたが、一緒にいた時の最も気に入ったことの１つは富士山登山でした。

　富士山登山は大変なものになりそうなことは初めからわかっていました。私たちは自分たちのペースで登ったので、楽しかったくらいです。私たちの頭上の富士山や眼下の谷の景色は美しいものでした。

　私たちは空に星が出てくるまで歩きました。午後８時頃風と寒さが厳しくなり、登り続けるにはあまりにも危険な状況になりました。私たちは暖を取って、少し睡眠をとるために山小屋に泊まることにしました。山小屋には日本人や外国人が入り乱れてたくさん泊まっていました。

　午前１時頃私たちは起床し、富士山を登り続けました。このころはものすごく寒かったのですが、私たちは多くの登山者に言葉をかけることで気持ちを高揚させていました。夜空はとても美しくて、星が輝いている夜空を見上げずにはいられませんでした。まるで魔法のようでした。

　私たちは日の出直前の午前４時までには頂上に着きました。頂上には何でも売っていて、暖かいものはとてもありがたく思いました。頂上は人で一杯でしたが、私たちは幸運なことに日の出を見るのに完璧な場所を見つけることができました。

              The Origins of Halloween        2104/10/09

 

Hello everyone, how are you all keeping? I know it has been a long time since my last morning speech. I hope you all enjoyed a great summer vacation and have settled back in to school life!

October is a very special month. The weather is getting cooler, leaves are changing color and people all over the world are getting ready for Halloween.

Where is Halloween from? America, I sense most of you are saying. Well believe it or not, Halloween comes from Ireland, my beautiful home country!! Known as “Samhain” in Irish, my native language, it has been celebrated for hundreds of years. It represents the last harvest of the growing year. People collected fruit and nuts, so that they would not go hungry during the cold winter months. The apple in particular was the symbol of the festival. Collecting food or “Trick or Treating” comes from these traditions. Samhain also was a festival for the dead, like Obon in Japan. People dressed in scary costumes so that evil spirits would not come and take them away. It all sounds very scary but this is where the tradition for dressing-up on Halloween came from.

So how did Samhain become Halloween? America!! Over 200 years ago many Irish people moved to America because of a very bad famine in Ireland. People continued to celebrate Samhain there. Throughout the years, America has changed this Irish, harvest festival in to an annual event where adults and children dress-up and children eat as much sweets as they want.

I hope you will all celebrate Halloween some way this year. If you do, remember where it originally comes from and the traditions behind it!! Happy Halloween : )

みなさん、こんにちは。いかがお過ごしですか。前回のモーニングスピーチから、しばらく経ちましたが、みんな楽しい夏休みを過ごして、また学校生活に戻ってきていると思います。 

１０月は特別な月です。どんどん涼しくなって木の葉も色付いてきました。そして世界中の人がハロウィンの準備をします。 

ハロウィンはどこから来たのでしょうか。アメリカ！みんなそう答えるのではないでしょうか。でも本当はハロウィンは私の故郷アイルランドから来たのです。アイルランド語では「サウイン」という名前で知られ、何百年間もお祝いされています。サウインはその年の最後の収穫を意味します。昔アイルランドの人々は寒い冬が来る前に、空腹で困らないように果物や木の実を集めました。特にりんごはこのお祭りの象徴でした。食べ物を集めること、つまり「お菓子をくれないと、いたずらしちゃうぞ。」というのは、このような伝統的な習慣から来ているのです。またサウインは日本のお盆のように死者のためのお祭りでもありました。アイルランドの人々は悪霊が来て連れて行かれないように怖い衣装を着ました。恐ろしい感じがしますが、これがハロウィンの仮装の由来です。

ではどうやってサウインはハロウィンになったのでしょうか。アメリカです！！２００年以上前、アイルランドが大飢饉だったため、多くのアイルランド人がアメリカに移住しました。アメリカでもアイルランド人はサウインをお祝いしました。年月がたち、このアイルランドの収穫祭はアメリカで大人も子どもも仮装して、子どもは食べたいだけお菓子を食べるという年中行事になりました。

#4 Morning Speech       The Amazing Arts Festival            03/07/2014

 

Good morning Seiryo,

 

Today I want to talk to you about last month’s “Arts Festival”. I knew we were going to see a wind orchestra but I did not know that they were one of the top three wind orchestras in Japan. Straight away, as they played the very first note I knew we were all in for a treat.

              I thought all the songs they played were amazing but one in particular really stood out for me. Do you remember the song called LondonDerry?  Well, Derry is a place in Ireland and it is a famous Irish song. We call the song Danny-Boy and it is sung at many festivals and weddings back home, in Ireland. I was so surprised and happy that they were playing this song. The whole experience made me laugh. There I was sitting in a theatre in Japan and a Japanese wind orchestra was playing an Irish song. I thought it was crazy, in a good way : )

              One of the best parts of the day was when the students and teachers participated on stage. I thought everybody was hilarious, dancing and playing instruments. The two student conductors were brilliant too. I was so jealous because I have always wanted to conduct an orchestra. Maybe next year : )

              Finally, congratulations and well done to all the members of the Brass Band who got to play with the orchestra. It is an amazing achievement. I am sure you will treasure the memory for life.

すばらしかった芸術鑑賞会

おはようございます。清陵高校のみなさん。

今日は先月行われた「芸術鑑賞会」について話したいと思います。ウインドオーケストラを鑑賞するのは知ってましたが、彼らが日本のトップ３のオーケストラの１つであることは知りませんでした。彼らが最初の音を出し始めると、すぐに、私たちみんな楽しめそうだなということがわかりました。

私は彼らが演奏したすべての曲に驚きましたが、特にある曲が印象に残りました。「ロンドンデリー」という曲を覚えてますか？デリーはアイルランドにある都市で、その曲はアイルランドでは有名です。私たちはその曲を「ダニーボーイ」と呼んでいて、多くの祭りや結婚式で演奏されます。彼らがこの曲を演奏してくれたことにとても驚き、そしてうれしかったです。体験したことすべてが私を笑わせました。日本の劇場で座って、日本のウインドオーケストラがアイルランドの歌を演奏している。それが良い意味でおかしく思えました。

　その日の最も良い場面の１つが生徒と先生がステージで一緒に参加したことでした。みんなが踊り、そして楽器を演奏しながら楽しくやっているなあと思いました。指揮者をやってくれた２人の生徒もすばらしかったです。私はオーケストラの指揮をやりたいと思っていたので、ちょっとうらやましかったです。ひょっとしたら来年は。

　最後に、（ウインド）オーケストラと一緒に演奏してくれた吹奏楽部の部員のみなさん、よくやってくれました。すばらしいです。きっとみなさんの記憶に残る宝物になるでしょう。

Good morning Seiryo,

 

How are you all? I hope you are all great.

 

Every four years thirty-two countries battle it out to see who will be crowned the best country at soccer. Last Thursday the 20^th World Cup started in Brazil. The country is very famous for its festivals and the opening ceremony of the contest did not disappoint. The World Cup is the biggest soccer tournament in the world. It started in 1930 with 19 tournaments been held since then.

Unfortunately, Ireland is not in it this year but I am still happy to watch it and support Japan : ). Ireland may not be in the World Cup this year but I have many fond memories of previous ones.

One of my favorite memories is from the 1994 World Cup held in the USA. I was only five years old but I remember everyone going crazy when Ireland qualified for the last sixteen. It was the furthest Ireland had ever gotten. People sold their cars and anything they could so that they could stay in the US longer.

Unfortunately, the team did not get through to the Quarter-finals. When they came home they were greeted at the airport by hundreds of thousands of people. We were all so proud of them for doing so well. The whole country, through stories and songs, still celebrate the 1994 World Cup.

I believe no matter where you come in anything, it is great to have taken part. I am so excited to cheer Japan on, as I am sure you all are too!!

みなさん元気ですか？　元気ですよね！

　４年に１回、３２の国がサッカーでどの国が一番強いのかを決めるために戦います。先週の木曜日、第２０回ワールドカップがブラジルで始まりました。ブラジルはカーニバルなどのお祭りでとても有名な国で、ワールドカップの開会式はとても素晴らしいものでした。ワールドカップは世界で最も大きなサッカー大会です。ワールドカップは１９３０年１９試合で始まりました。そしてその時以来続いています。

　残念ながら、アイルランドは今年出場しませんが、試合を見て日本を応援して楽しんでいます：)。　私の母国は今回出ていません。でも、過去の素晴らしい思い出の試合がたくさんあります。
　私の大好きな試合の一つがアメリカで開催された１９９４年のワールドカップです。私はまだ５歳でしたが、アイルランドが決勝トーナメントに残った時、誰もが熱狂したことを覚えています。アイルランドにとって決勝トーナメントは初めてのことでした。人々はアメリカにもっと長く滞在できるように車を売ったり、売れるものは何でも売ったりしました。
　残念なことに、チームは準々決勝に残ることはできませんでした。選手たちが母国に戻ってきたとき何十万もの人々が空港で選手を歓迎しました。私たちは彼らが非常によく頑張ったことをとても誇りに思いました。国全体が、その当時の試合と歌で、今でも１９９４年のワールドカップを祝います。

　例えば外国など、あなたがどこか他の場所へいるとしても、試合を見て応援することはとても素晴らしいことだと思います。私はみんなと同じように、とてもわくわくして日本を応援しています。

How are you all keeping? Very well I hope.

 

To all the First grade students and new staff members, WELCOME!! I hope you are having a great time and are enjoying life at Seiryo. 

I never realized but there is almost 30 clubs in Seiryo. I think you are very lucky because there are so many for you to choose from, so make sure to enjoy all the clubs the school has.

Second and third grade students, welcome back: ) Remember, you are seniors now so please make sure to take care of all our new students and to make them feel at home.

I am very happy this month because spring is here, which means winter is over, whoo!!

I went travelling during spring vacation and when I came back to Japan I was so happy to see all the Cherry blossoms in full bloom. Every where people were having parties outside and enjoying this wonderful time of year. Did you have any parties in Utsunomiya? I hope so!! As a foreigner in Japan this is one of the most special times of year for me : ) It is truly wonderful!

 　今まで気づかなかったのですが、清陵には約３０の部活があります。選べる選択肢が多いので、みなさんはラッキーだと思います。学校にある部活動はどれも、きっと楽しめるはずです。

　２，３年生のみなさん、（春休みが終わって）お帰りなさい。みなさんは先輩になったので、１年生の面倒をよく見て、安心して過ごせるようにしてあげてくださいね。

　春が来たから、今月はウキウキしています。冬は終わったの、whoo!!

 　春休みに旅行に出かけ、日本に帰ってきたら桜が満開でとてもうれしかったです。あちこちで人々がパーティをして、１年のうちの素晴らしい時期を楽しんでいます。みなさんはパーティをしましたか？きっとしたよね。日本にいる外国人である私にとって、この時期は特別なもののうちの１つです。本当に素晴らしい！

Good morning Seriyo, Happy Saint (St.) Patrick’s Day!!

Last Monday on March 17^th I celebrated St. Patrick’s Day, Ireland’s national holiday. In Ireland and all around the world millions of people celebrate being Irish. Luckily, last Sunday, there was a big St. Patrick’s Day parade and Irish festival in Yoyogi Park in Tokyo.

St. Patrick’s day is celebrated to remember the man that brought Christianity to Ireland. Now days the day is used to celebrate being Irish, no matter where you live in the world. Four million people live in Ireland but more than seventy million people have Irish ancestry. This is one of the many reasons why St. Patrick’s Day is such a huge celebration around the world. In Ireland hundreds of festivals and parades are held. Many people listen to Irish music, Irish dance and sing Irish songs, this is known as Ceol agus Craic (music and fun) in Irish.

Traditionally on St. Patrick’s Day, people go to Church in the morning, go to the parade in the afternoon and have a big party for the rest of the day. America has some of its biggest parades in Boston, New York and Chicago. They even dye the Chicago river and Niagra Falls green because so many Irish live there.It is a great day to celebrate and I am always glad to celebrate being Irish no matter where I am in the world!!: )  Slán agus beannacht leat  (Bye and good health to you)!!

Good morning Seriyo, Happy New Year!!

I hope you all had a wonderful, relaxing winter break and have settled into the last term of school. As you know I went home to Ireland for Christmas. I had a great time but I am very happy to be back in Japan.

Today I want to tell you about New Year’s rituals. On New Year’s Eve, people across the world make resolutions to make their life better. To help them achieve their resolutions they can do various things. In Spain, people eat one grape for every stroke of the clock at midnight, symbolizing luck for each month of the year. In South America, people who would like to travel in the coming 12 months walk around their house with a suitcase. These rituals may seem strange but maybe people believe they work.

In Ireland we have many rituals. Centuries ago it was customary to begin the New Year with a spotlessly clean house. As a result houses were thoroughly cleaned as is signified a fresh start to the New Year. Do you do this in Japan? Another tradition for good luck, involves people entering the house through the front door and leaving through the back door at midnight.

Every country, city, town and family has their own rituals for the New Year. Why don’t you ask your friends what theirs is? You might find out something very interesting about them that you didn’t know before: )

今日は、みなさんに新年の儀式について話したいと思います。大晦日に、世界中の人々は自分たちの生活がよりよくなるようにある決意をします。その決意を達成するために、人々は様々なことをします。スペインでは、真夜中に時計のベルが鳴るごとにブドウを１粒食べ、その年の幸運を象徴しています。南アメリカでは、翌年に旅行をしたい人々はスーツケースを持って、家の周りを歩きます。これらの儀式は変わっているかもしれませんが、多くの人たちはそれらにご利益があると信じています。

アイルランドでは儀式がたくさんあります。数世紀前は、汚れのない、きれいな家で新年を迎えることが習慣でした。その結果、家が完全にきれいにすることが、新年を新鮮な気持ちで迎えることを意味するようになりました。日本ではこのようなことをしますか？幸運のためのもう一つの伝統は、玄関を通って家に入ったり、真夜中に家の裏にある戸から出たりすることです。

Good morning Seriyo、I hope you are all keeping warm in this cold weather!!
            Today is the 11^th of December, which means it is exactly two weeks until Christmas Day and most importantly winter vacation.

Today I would like to talk about the differences between Christmas in Japan and Ireland. Traditionally, in Ireland, families spend Christmas day together. We get up early to open presents that we leave under the Christmas tree and spend the day watching movies and eating food. In the afternoon we all sit down to a massive Christmas dinner and enjoy each other’s company. My favorite Christmas movie is “It’s A Wonderful Life”. It was made in 1946 but is still shown on TV every Christmas.

              My Japanese friends have told me that you celebrate Christmas day differently. It is seen as more of a couples holiday, like valentines and New Years is spent with your family. This is really the opposite of what we do in Ireland. On New Years Eve we spend it with our friends at parties. I love living in Japan and learning about the cultural and traditional differences between here and Ireland.

                            One of my favorite parts of Christmas is listening to all the Christmas music. One of my favorite songs is “Driving home for Christmas” by Chris Rea. This year I have to change the words to “Flying home for Christmas” : )

          Long ago in Ireland we celebrated "Samhain". A great cultural festival that marked the boundary between our world and the spirit world. It was celebrated as the Celtic New Year's Eve that belonged to neither the past nor present.

          Samhain was considered the last harvest of the growing year. Fruit and nuts were gathered and the apple in particular was the symbol of the harvest. The apple and fruit picking is still very much a part of Halloween today. It is not uncommon for children to receive fruit and nuts when "trick or treating".

         At this time spirits walked amongst the living and this time is known as "All Hallows Eve". To guide loved ones who had died home, people put candles in their windows. To keep evil and unwelcome spirits away the candle was put in a pumpkin that had a demon face cut in to it. This is known as a "Jack O'Latern" and is still found in many Irish homes during Halloween.

             I hope you are all well !! Welcome back to school. I hope you all had a great summer vacation and settled back into school ok. I sepnt my summer vacation getting ready to move to Japan. I was sad to say goodbye to my family and friends back in Ireland but I am so happy to be living in Japan.

            My first month in Japan I spent a lot time preparing class, I also had a lot of fun learning about Japanese life. I have learnt about Utsunomyia, baseball and most importantly "Macha" ice-cream. I was very happy to attend Utsunomyia fireworks festival, it was amazing!! Did you go? I hope so.

            This month we also had our school cultural festival. It was my first ever one and I thought it was fantastic!! I was so happy to see everyone having fun, singing and dancing. Also, I must say a big congratulations to the brass band who came second in their recent competetion. Well done to all the students and teachers involved.

_ Good morning Yanaoka-sensei! I’m very happy to be your guest today. I think students are also very excited to have you as the host of morning speech. It’s a nice change!

_ I hope so! Well, how are you enjoying Japanese summer?

_ hmmm, I’m sort of enjoying it. But recently it has been raining a lot and it’s too humid sometimes.

_ That’s true! It is because we are going through the rainy season. In Japanese we call it “Tsuyu”.

_ Ahh, I see.

_ Do you have rainy season in Canada?

_ hmmmm, Where I live in Toronto we do have a rainy season. But it is only during spring.

_ Really? Does it rain very hard in Toronto during the rainy season?

_ hmmm, it rains somewhat hard, but it’s not like Japan where it rains cats and dogs during most of the rainy season.

_ It rains cats and dogs? What does that mean?

_ “It rains cats and dogs” means “It rains very hard”. It’s an English idiom.

_ I see! Well, the weather forecast says we are going to have heavy rains this evening. In other words, it’s probably going to rain cats and dogs.

This is the first morning speech of the new school year and I am very excited to start another fresh year with all of you! 

First grade students! Are you having a good time at Seiryo? Have you made lots of new friends already? How about after school clubs? Have you joined any yet?

I think club activities are one of the best parts of high school life. You can explore your interests and also make friends with those who share the same interests as you. So first graders! Please check out our clubs and join one that you find interesting!

Shiori: I’m a member of the cooking club. Members of our club are all very funny and kind. We make sweets and many kinds of dishes together every week. If you are interested in cooking, join us! We’ll have a great time together!

Kaori: First grade students! How do you do? Are you getting used to Seiryo high       school? I’m not a member of any clubs but I want to say welcome to our school! Let’s have lots of fun together this year!

Good Morning everyone!

 

It’s December again and we all can’t wait for the winter holiday’s fun to begin. Students and teachers! Hang in there. We’ve got only one more week of school left.

 

Around this time of the year, I think a lot about my hometown, Toronto. I love spending Christmas and New Year’s there because Toronto is always covered in snow all winter long. So our Christmas is always beautiful and white.

 

This year I cannot go back home during winter. But I was lucky to spend four days in Hokkaido instead. It felt just like home and made me so happy! I visited three cities in Hokkaido; Hakodate, Sapporo and Otaru.

Sapporo is a lot like Toronto. First, it’s a big modern city with lots of people rushing around all the time. Second, it is cold and snowy around this time. And last, it is great for shopping and has excellent food!

If you have never visited Hokkaido in winter, please do!

 It’ll be an experience of a lifetime.

Good Morning!

Today I want to tell you about my very special experience last weekend. Last Saturday I went to Shioya-machi. Have you ever been there? I wouldn’t be surprised if none of you have been to this town before!

Shioya machi is a very small town about 30 kilometers northeast of Nikko. Despite being so small, the town has a thriving local theatre company. They travel around and stage kabuki shows and dance performances all over Japan and abroad.

For me this was a very exciting experience because I had never seen anything like it! The first part was a play based on a folk story. Although I didn’t understand most of the conversations I was still able to enjoy it!

The second half was a series of beautiful dance performances. The dancers were all very skillful. Some of them danced with a fan and some with cute little umbrellas! It was an experience beyond what words can describe!

Today I want to talk to you about my summer holiday. This year, I got to do many things during summer. I travelled, hung out with my friends, went shopping and even found time to relax. But the most memorable part of my summer was climbing Mount Fuji. It was my first time climbing a mountain, so it was not easy at all. In fact, it was difficult and exhausting. But watching the sunrise on top of Mount Fuji was an amazing experience. I will never forget it for the rest of my life.

_ Well, mountain hiking is one of my favorite hobbies. I had climbed several other mountains before but it was my first time climbing Mount Fuji too. It was a wonderful experience!

_ Would you climb Fuji again in the future?

_ Yes I would love to! Would you?

_ Hmmm… No, I don’t think so!
