ソフィー先生の帰国

　本校で１年間、外国語指導助手（ALT）として勤務していたソフィー・トーマス先生が帰国することになりました。ソフィー先生はオーストラリアのアデレード市の出身。本校や近隣の高校で英語を教えてくださいました。
　昨年の８月に来日して以来、持ち前の明るさと何事にも前向きに取り組む積極性を発揮し、瞬く間に本校に溶け込んでくださいました。生徒たちに英語を教えることが大好きで、生徒たちと話をすることをいつも楽しんで、職員室を和気あいあいとした雰囲気にしてくれました。日本と日本文化に興味を持ち、茶や生け花などにも挑戦したり、東日本大震災の被災地でのボランティア活動にも参加してくださいました。
　帰国後は大学に戻り、図書館司書を目指して勉学に励むということです。本校1年間のご指導、本当にありがとうございました。今後の益々のご活躍をお祈り申し上げます。最後に先生からメッセージを戴きましたので掲載します。

Dear Ashikaga Seifu High School,
 Thank you very much for a fantastic year. I have enjoyed teaching all of you, and everyone has taught me many things. Your new ALT is very excited about coming to Japan, so please make him feel welcome and continue to try your best in all your English lessons. Do not forget that you can practice speaking, listening, reading and writing English outside of school as well!
 Learning English isn't always easy, but it is a useful skill. You can use it for enjoying music and movies, for work and for making new friends. There are many English speakers who want to meet Japanese people. By using English, you can share the best of Japan with a foreign person, and they can share the best of their country with you.
 I will soon move back to Adelaide to go back to university. I will be studying to be a librarian. Hopefully after I graduate I will work in a school library.
 I am going to miss you all very much!
